MALCESINE AND LAZISE: two places to visit during your holidays
Among the countless natural, architectural and archaeological attractions in the area surrounding Lake Garda, two places recommended to visit during your time in this land are undoubtedly Scaligero Castle in Malcesine and the Garda Thermal Park.
The former is a medieval castle which stands in the little town of Malcesine, in Verona province on the north-eastern shore of the lake.
This fortress, which over the centuries has passed through the hands of Lombards, Franks, Scaligeri, Venetians, French and Austrians, owes its fame partly to the drawings and descriptions of the German poet Goethe in his book "Italian Journey", subject of a museum and a bust inside the castle. But what makes this castle unique, and declared a National Monument in 1902, is its position, perched atop a rocky outcrop above the lake, and commanding spectacular views.
The Villa dei Cedri Thermal Park in Colà di Lazise owes its name to the many examples of cedars growing in the gardens; alongside cypresses, yews, centuries-old beeches, sequoias and scented magnolias, these create a peaceful place for relaxation and walks immersed in nature. Within the park is a thermal grotto, connected to lakes whose mineral waters, rich in bicarbonate, calcium and silicon, have many health benefits. To immerse oneself in these natural sources, surrounded by green nature, is a delight for mind and body alike.
